'Doing Good Work with Families'

Akeyulerre is located beside Billy Goat Hill. 2000 was the year old people incorporated Akeyulerre as a healing centre. It was a place for Arrernte people to inteme angkwerre iwerre meaning to follow the footsteps of traditional healing. One of the reasons for starting this type of healing was that Arrernte people didn’t always like the hospital and its modern medicine. Akeyulerre heals through healing the spirit as well as the body. People, not only Arrernte but all individuals, indigenous and non-indigenous go there to buy bush medicines. Young woman collect the bushes and seeds with the older women and then bring them back to grind. The women take it out to Arid Zone where they are packaged with other ingredients ready as bush rubs for traditional healing. It’s great to see such important cultural knowledge being passed on to the younger generation and that these products are shared with the Australian public. Healing cards are written in Arrernte and English explaining what plants are used to treat illness and the methods used in making bush medicine.
