Waltja received some funding to hold an activity for communities to celebrate Australia Day in their own way. Atitjere was chosen to hold this activity at this time.
Some of the ladies painted some canvas’s depicting how they celebrated the occasion and what Australia Day means to them.
A community BBQ was held at My Pathways and was attended by about 75 men and women.
After the event many of the families took their young people out bush to gather bush tucker, spend time with the Elders and young children, teaching the younger people about culture, always talking about the old days and how things have changed – some good and some bad. It was a really good community event with everyone reflecting on what life is all about. This was a day that was enjoyed by all.
What are you planning for 2019? We would love to put your story in the Family News.
