At the end of September 2014, women and children from Yuendumu, Willowra, Nyirrpi and Pilbara communities came together at Hamilton Downs Youth Camp with 13 stakeholders including Waltja to share in a weekend of talking and learning about keeping children safe. The weekend was organised collaboratively by the Early Childhood Reference Groups (ECRGs) in each Warlpiri community, with the support of World Vision Australia. The ECRGs are governance groups of men and women who are passionate about early childhood and meet regularly to learn and grow so they can be a strong voice for young children in their community.

The weekend was very successful generating a lot of productive conversation as well as kids’ activities, roo tail and pedicures. People who attended the weekend are continuing to share learning’s and stories from the weekend with the rest of their communities. Text by Amy Malberg (Thanks for inviting Waltja)

Three Waltja Directors, Barbara Williams, Enid Gallagher and Lillian Long all attended the camp.

Barbara said they had a lot of workshops talking about how to protect children and keep them safe while on community or on the internet. Enid was happy that they had this camp because our children are very important and she hopes that they continue to have this camp. Lillian said that it was a good respectful place where everyone felt safe to tell their stories and learn from others.
