The Grandmother’s Stories project supports transmission of Aboriginal cultural knowledge by Aboriginal women in Central Australia to younger generations.
During our visit to Mt Liebig, Regional Council staff asked us about the project. We explained the aims of the program and then were asked if the ladies would paint some items that are being recycled such as tyres, pipes and containers.
Waltja workers Margaret and Christine told the ladies about a project that the Shire was doing and asked if they were willing to paint the items with a theme based on culture to which they said yes and it was for the community.
They spent two days painting, thoroughly enjoying the time. While working hard, they told stories and could still have a laugh.
The containers will be used as planters for around the office area and tyres in the new playground, which will be made of recyclable items.
