Kapaliku ngurra yirritinguru (Our Grandmother Ancestors Have Been Here Forever) is a community-based arts project working with Aboriginal people in communities across Central Australia. This projects within Waltja’s focus area to Keep Culture Strong.

In 2015-2016 Waltja worked with Senior Women Elders and young women to support the transfer of Pintupi-Luritja culture and language to younger generations. The senior women decided to focus on creating a painting together and sharing stories and songs. They also spent time at and take care of an important waterhole. Through the workshops we produced a video documentary.

This project was supported by the Commonwealth Ministry of Arts Indigenous Languages and Arts Program.

After the project in Kintore, Waltja members from other communities saw the video and talked about doing projects like this in their community. Waltja was able to get further support from the Commonwealth Ministry of Arts Indigenous Languages and Arts Program to work with two more communities, Engawala and Mount Liebig. In each community the senior women elders have chosen to focus on different aspects of culture to document. Waltja Directors have been very happy to support communities in this important work.
