Waltja Directors have told us that people on community sometimes worry about money. It can be hard for people to manage their money so that it lasts until next payday. It can be even harder to save money for big bills, holidays etc.
Waltja’s Money Management program helps Aboriginal people to make good decisions about money. We provide fun workshops to help people learn about money, and also help people with any money worries they might have. We can help community members talk to banks or Centrelink, provide resources to help budget or save, and also refer people to Financial Counsellors for bigger worries.
The workshops cover topics such as:
- Making the money last until payday
- Saving for the future
- Credit and loans
We can also run workshops on any topic community members would like. Our “Healthy Cooking on a Budget” workshops (run together with Department of Health nutritionists) have been very popular.
Waltja has secured FaHCSIA funding to deliver this Money Management Program in the following communities:
- Iwupataka (Jay Creek)
- Titjikala (Maryvale)
- Mount Liebig
- Laramba (Napperby)
- Wilora (Stirling)
Red Cross, Lutheran Community Care and Catholic Care deliver the program in other remote communities in Central Australia, and in Alice Springs people can also contact Tangentyere or Anglicare.
