'Doing Good Work with Families'

Waltja Directors ran a Cultural Orientation Workshop for Red Dust Role Models and Grant Thornton Future Leaders. This was run by Waltja’s Directors, who have their own cultural learning and cultural tourism business. The Waltja Directors and members who came were April and Barbara from Willowra, Irene from Kintore, Sharon, Launce and Beryl from Laramba, Wendy, Enid and Alma from Yuendumu, Margaret from Titjikala, Mia from Santa Teresa and Isobel from Papunya.

Jenny Martin and Lola Williams joined in too. One group of about 20 people went to Waltja office at Ghan Rd. April and Margaret told them about Waltja and the staff talked about the different programs. Then that group came to join in at our bush block. The Directors taught about culture to a big group of nearly 50 people. We were in three different groups. Mia and Beryl taught about healing through bush medicines. Irene, Enid, Isobel, and Barbara taught about family and culture and skin names. Wendy, Alma, Sharon and Launce taught about how to use symbols to tell a story through painting.

The Waltja Directors talked up really well, and shared their knowledge in a kind and friendly way. The feedback from Red Dust and Grant Thornton is they really enjoyed and appreciated this special opportunity to learn about culture. Directors all said they want Waltja to do more cultural orientation workshops. If you are interested in a cultural
